Contemporary Maldivian art and design is a smaller, less internationally documented scene than the country's traditional crafts (see our traditional crafts guide), but it's increasingly visible — often through resort architecture and commissioned installations rather than a formal gallery circuit.
Resorts as a design showcase
JOALI Maldives in Raa Atoll is the clearest example already in this directory of a resort built explicitly around commissioned contemporary art, but design-forward architecture and interiors show up across a number of newer properties as a genuine point of brand differentiation, alongside the more traditional overwater-villa template.
Where traditional and modern meet
Some contemporary design work draws directly on traditional forms — liyelaa jehun lacquer work and thundu kunaa weaving patterns occasionally reappear reinterpreted in modern resort interiors and product design, rather than existing purely as separate, siloed traditions.
Beyond the resorts
A smaller, less resort-dependent contemporary art and design scene exists in Malé itself, though it's not as easy for a short-term visitor to find as an established gallery district — worth asking locally if this specifically interests you during any time you spend in the capital (see our Malé layover guide).
