Accessibility considerations

Accessibility isn't something Maldives resort marketing addresses consistently, and the country's basic terrain — soft sand, timber jetties, overwater walkways — makes it a genuinely important thing to plan around rather than assume will simply work out.

Terrain and villa access

Beach villas generally involve walking or wheeling across sand, which is more physically demanding than a paved path. Overwater villas (see our overwater villas guide) are connected by wooden walkways that can include steps, and villa interiors themselves aren't universally built to accessible standards — this varies significantly resort to resort rather than following any single national standard.

Transfers

Speedboat and seaplane transfers (see our getting around the atolls guide) generally involve boarding via steps rather than a ramp or lift, on a moving jetty or pontoon — worth discussing directly with your resort or transfer operator if mobility is a concern, since assistance and equipment varies by operator.

What to actually do

Contact the specific resort directly, well before booking, and ask detailed questions: villa layout and step counts, bathroom accessibility, transfer boarding process, and what staff assistance is available. Generic "accessible room" labelling in a brochure doesn't always reflect the specifics that matter for a given need — a direct conversation with the resort is more reliable than assuming from marketing material.
