Marine life

Whale sharks & manta rays

Two encounters dominate why people come to the Maldives specifically for marine life, and they work on different calendars, so it's worth knowing which one lines up with your travel dates.

Whale sharks

South Ari Atoll is unusual even by Maldives standards for hosting whale shark sightings year-round rather than seasonally, which is why so many dive operators and resorts cluster there specifically. These are filter-feeding giants, not predators, and snorkelling alongside one is typically a calm, slow-swimming encounter rather than an adrenaline one.

Manta rays

Manta sightings are more seasonal and tied to plankton blooms driven by the monsoon. Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is the best-known example — a UNESCO-protected bay where feeding aggregations, sometimes involving dozens of mantas at once, peak roughly from May to November during the southwest monsoon. See our Baa Atoll guide for how access there is managed.

Doing it responsibly

  • No touching, riding, or blocking a whale shark's or manta's path — both need to keep swimming to feed and breathe efficiently.
  • No flash photography.
  • Keep a respectful distance and let a licensed local guide manage group positioning — this is exactly what protects the encounter for the next visitor, and the next decade of visitors.
Book locally where you can: operators based on or near the actual sighting sites (South Ari for whale sharks, Baa for mantas) generally have the most current, responsible knowledge of where animals are and how crowded a site is on a given day.
