A huge share of the Maldives' appeal is underwater, which makes it a genuinely practical place to learn to dive rather than treating diving as something you do somewhere else first and merely enjoy here.
Discover Scuba — trying it without committing
Almost every resort and liveaboard dive centre offers a "Discover Scuba" style introductory experience: a short briefing followed by one supervised shallow dive with an instructor, no certification required. It's the standard way to find out whether diving suits you before committing time and money to a full course.
Open Water certification
A full beginner certification — most commonly PADI or SSI Open Water — typically runs three to four days, combining classroom/e-learning theory, confined-water skills practice, and a set of open-water dives. Once certified, it's recognised internationally, not just at the resort where you took it — a genuinely useful thing to bring home, not just a holiday activity.
Going further
Divers who already hold Open Water certification can work toward Advanced Open Water and beyond directly at most resort dive centres — relevant if channel dives or night diving (see our night diving guide) are on your list, since several of the Maldives' best sites call for that level of certification.
What to check before booking a course
- Class sizes — smaller instructor-to-student ratios generally mean more individual attention.
- Whether the certification card is issued immediately or processed afterward.
- Age minimums if travelling with children — most agencies offer a Junior Open Water option from around age 10.
