Souvenir shopping in the Maldives splits fairly cleanly into two categories — resort boutique convenience, and the more genuinely local option a short trip into Malé or a local island provides — and it's worth knowing the difference before assuming a resort gift shop item is authentically Maldivian-made.
Resort boutiques
Convenient, generally well-stocked with beachwear, jewellery and gift items, but not everything sold is locally made — some stock is imported or generically "tropical" rather than specifically Maldivian. Worth asking directly if provenance matters to you.
Genuinely local crafts
See our traditional crafts guide for the two clearest examples: liyelaa jehun lacquer work and thundu kunaa reed-mat weaving. Small lacquer pieces in particular travel well and make a distinctive, genuinely local souvenir compared to generic tropical gift-shop items.
Where to look
Malé's local market and craft shops (see our Malé layover guide) are a more reliable source for authentically local-made items than a resort boutique — worth a stop if your itinerary includes any time in the capital.
Other common souvenirs
Local spices, coconut-based products (oils, soaps), and woven pandan-leaf items are all common, practical souvenirs that travel well and reflect genuine local materials and traditions rather than generic tourist merchandise.
