Where our traditional games & pastimes guide covers historical Maldivian pastimes, this page is about what's actually most popular today — which, as in much of South Asia, is overwhelmingly football.
Football's national popularity
Football is comfortably the most popular sport in the Maldives, with community and school-level matches a common sight on local islands — small, sandy pitches doubling as football grounds are a familiar part of local-island life (see our local island life guide).
What visitors actually encounter
Almost all visitor-facing sport and recreation in the Maldives is water-based rather than land-based, for the obvious geographic reason — see our diving & snorkelling, surfing, and kayaking & paddleboarding guides. Land-based sport is much more a local community activity than a resort amenity.
Where the two worlds meet
Some resorts do maintain a football pitch or general sports court for staff and community use, and a handful run friendly matches involving guests — worth asking directly if this interests you, since it's a genuinely different way to interact with resort staff than the usual guest-service dynamic.
