Raivaru: poetry & oral tradition

Alongside music and dance (see our boduberu guide), the Maldives has its own poetic tradition — raivaru — a form of composed verse in Dhivehi historically used for far more than romantic expression alone.

What raivaru was used for

Traditionally, raivaru served purposes that a modern reader might not immediately associate with poetry: recording historical events, encoding practical or navigational knowledge, and — as in many oral poetic traditions worldwide — romantic and emotional expression, all composed in a structured verse form meant to be memorable and, often, performed aloud.

An oral tradition, not just a written one

Like much of Maldivian cultural history before the more recent expansion of the Thaana script (see our Dhivehi language guide) into wider use, raivaru was substantially an oral tradition — composed, recited and passed down rather than primarily circulated as written text.

Its place today

Raivaru is a less prominent, less visible tradition to visitors than boduberu music or traditional crafts, but it remains a genuine part of Dhivehi-language literary and cultural heritage, referenced in Maldivian education and cultural preservation efforts even where it's not something a short-term visitor is likely to directly encounter.
