Villa amenities: what's actually standard

Villa category names — deluxe, premium, presidential — vary so much brand to brand that they don't tell you much on their own. This page covers what's genuinely standard almost everywhere, versus what's a real category upgrade worth paying attention to.

Standard almost everywhere

Air conditioning, WiFi, an in-room safe and a stocked minibar are close to universal across resort villa categories at this point, regardless of price tier — not meaningfully differentiating one villa from another.

What actually varies by tier

  • Private pool — increasingly common but still not universal at every tier; a genuine differentiator worth checking for specifically.
  • Outdoor bathtub or rain shower — a common higher-tier feature, particularly at overwater categories.
  • Butler or dedicated host service — more common at higher-end and boutique properties (see our Gili Lankanfushi profile for a well-known example) than at large, high-volume resorts.

Overwater-specific extras

Glass floor panels for fish-watching from inside the villa, and direct lagoon-access steps from your own deck, are common overwater villa features — see our overwater villas guide for the fuller comparison against beach villas.

The one thing worth actually confirming

Brochure category names are inconsistent brand to brand — always check the specific inclusions list for your exact villa category and number, rather than assuming a "premium" label at one resort matches a "premium" label at another.
